This is a higher-stakes version of the peer-conflict question — it checks whether you can push back on someone with more power over your career without either capitulating or burning the relationship.

What a strong answer covers

• The actual substance of the disagreement, framed fairly to your manager's position
• How you raised it — privately, with data, without ambushing them in front of others
• Whether you ultimately got your way, compromised, or deferred to their call — all three are fine answers if you explain your reasoning for accepting the outcome
• What the relationship looked like afterward — this is the detail that proves it was actually resolved, not just dropped

Common pitfalls

• Framing your manager as simply wrong or unreasonable — even if true, this reads as a red flag to an interviewer who will one day be your manager
• Picking an example that's really about the manager being a bad person rather than a specific, resolvable disagreement
