Describe a time you had to give difficult feedback to a peer

Why interviewers ask this

Giving feedback to someone at the same level as you (not a direct report) is harder than giving it downward — there's no authority backing you up, just the relationship and your delivery. This checks whether you can do it constructively.

What a strong answer covers

• What the feedback was about, specifically — a recurring pattern is usually a better example than a one-off mistake
• Why you decided it was worth raising rather than letting it go
• How you delivered it — privately, framed around specific behavior and impact rather than character, and ideally inviting their perspective rather than just stating a verdict
• How they reacted, and what the relationship and their behavior looked like afterward

Common pitfalls

• A story where the "difficult feedback" was actually easy to give because the relationship was already strained or the recipient was clearly receptive
• No description of the actual delivery — this question is really testing delivery skill, not just the decision to say something
