Why interviewers ask this

Long projects fail socially as often as they fail technically — stakeholders who feel out of the loop lose confidence even when the work itself is going fine. This checks whether you proactively manage that, or wait to be asked.

What a strong answer covers

• Your actual communication cadence and format — specific, not just "I kept people updated"
• How you tailored the communication to different audiences (a one-line summary for leadership, more detail for people directly involved)
• A specific moment where proactive communication headed off a problem — a stakeholder catching a misalignment early, or avoiding a surprise later
• How you handled periods where there wasn't much good news to report, since that's the real test of a communication habit

Common pitfalls

• A generic answer with no specific format or cadence described
• No example of the communication habit actually mattering — just describing the habit in the abstract
