Why interviewers ask this

This checks intellectual honesty and whether new evidence can actually change your mind, which matters enormously for engineers who will inevitably make confident calls that later turn out to be incomplete or wrong.

What a strong answer covers

• What you originally believed and why — with genuine conviction, not a strawman position you never really held
• What specifically changed your mind — new data, someone else's argument, a real-world result that contradicted your expectation
• How you communicated the change of position, especially if you'd previously advocated for the wrong view publicly
• What you did differently as a result, beyond just updating your opinion privately

Common pitfalls

• A "wrong belief" that was really a minor detail rather than something you held with genuine conviction
• No mention of publicly correcting course if you'd previously advocated for the original position to others
