Why interviewers ask this

This is partly a technical-depth check and partly a communication check — can you explain something genuinely complex clearly to someone who wasn't there for the debugging?

What a strong answer covers

• The problem stated clearly enough that a non-expert in that exact area can follow along, without dumbing it down so much it loses the real complexity
• Why it was hard — a tricky root cause, a system with many interacting parts, a fix that required understanding tradeoffs across multiple components
• Your actual process for narrowing it down — the specific investigative steps, not just "I looked into it and found the issue"
• The result, and ideally what made the fix durable rather than a one-off patch

Common pitfalls

• Picking something technically simple but described with a lot of jargon to sound complex
• Skipping the investigative process and jumping straight to the answer, which hides the actual problem-solving skill being tested
