Real problems don't respect team boundaries. This question separates people who say "not my job" from people who fix what's broken and hand it off cleanly afterward.

What a strong answer covers

• Why the problem was genuinely outside your scope, not just adjacent to it
• The moment you decided to act instead of escalating and waiting
• How you avoided overstepping — did you loop in the actual owner, or just take over permanently?
• What you did to make sure the fix was sustainable after you stepped back, not just a one-time patch only you understand

Common pitfalls

• A story where the problem was quietly already part of your job — interviewers will probe on scope
• No mention of handing the responsibility back to its proper owner, which can read as territorial rather than helpful
