Tell me about a time you had to explain something technical to a non-technical audience

Why interviewers ask this

Engineers who can only communicate with other engineers have a real ceiling on their impact. This checks whether you can translate technical substance into something a different audience can actually act on.

What a strong answer covers

• Who the audience was and what they actually needed to understand — the full technical picture, or just enough to make a decision?
• The specific technique you used to make it land: an analogy, a visual, a focus on outcomes over mechanism
• How you knew it landed — a question they asked, a decision they made, feedback they gave
• What you'd do differently next time, if anything

Common pitfalls

• A story where the audience was actually semi-technical (a PM who codes a little), which undersells the actual translation skill
• No evidence the explanation actually worked — just describing what you said, not whether they understood it
