Why interviewers ask this

Engineers rarely work in isolation — this checks whether you can communicate effectively with people who don't share your technical vocabulary or priorities, like product, design, sales, or legal.

What a strong answer covers

• Who the other function was, and what made collaborating with them genuinely different from working with other engineers — different vocabulary, different incentives, different timelines
• A specific moment of friction or misunderstanding caused by that gap, and how you bridged it
• Concrete adjustments you made to how you communicated (less jargon, more visuals, different meeting cadence)
• The outcome, ideally something that wouldn't have gone well without the cross-functional collaboration working

Common pitfalls

• A story that's really just about working with another engineer on a different team, which doesn't test the same skill
• No specific example of a communication or priority gap being bridged
