Describe how you prioritize when everything feels urgent

Why interviewers ask this

Nearly every job eventually produces a moment where three things all seem equally critical. This checks whether you have an actual method for triage, versus reacting to whoever asked most recently or most loudly.

What a strong answer covers

• A specific real moment, not a general philosophy — "I use the Eisenhower matrix" without an example is a weak answer
• What information you gathered to actually compare the competing priorities (impact, deadline flexibility, who's blocked)
• How you communicated the prioritization decision to the people whose items got deprioritized
• Whether the call turned out to be right, and what you'd do differently if not

Common pitfalls

• Describing a prioritization framework in the abstract with no grounded example
• No mention of communicating the deprioritization to affected stakeholders — silently reordering your own queue isn't the hard part of this skill
